Jamie Sutherland – K-5 Learning Resource Specialist

My name is Jamie Sutherland and I am the K-5 resource teacher. I received my B.S. degree from Eastern Illinois University in Elementary Education and my M.S. degree from Northern Illinois University in Special Education. After graduating from EIU, I moved to Rhode Island where I began my first teaching job at a therapeutic day treatment facility for students with emotional and behavioral disorders. I was the K-2 classroom teacher and it was here that I found my love for teaching special education! When I moved back to Illinois I decided to become certified in special education. While getting my Master’s degree, I worked 1 year as a middle school teacher for students with emotional and behavioral disorders, and 3 years as a K-4 resource teacher. While living in Rockford, IL, I was blessed to meet and marry my husband Nick.

After living in Rockford for four years, we decided to move to the Bloomington-Normal area so that we could be closer to my parents and two brothers. We both began teaching at Normal Community High School. I co-taught English and science, and taught self-contained English classes in grades 9-12. While working at Normal Community High School, I became pregnant with our first child! After our son was born, my husband and I decided that I would finish out the school year and then stay home with our son.

I was ecstatic when God led me to St. Mary’s! I feel so blessed that I am able to work part time and continue my love for teaching, while also being able to spend more time at home with my two sons!

When I’m not chasing after my 1 and 3 year old, I enjoy cooking and baking, gardening, and reading. My family and I attend Trinity Lutheran Church.
