English Language Arts

The Middle School English/Language Arts curriculum focuses on the 5 components of literacy including vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, writing, and speaking/listening.  Each quarter is broken into 2 sections: a reading chunk and a writing chunk. Within those chunks, the components of literacy are addressed in a variety of methods. Students may compile interesting and unknown words from a novel during literatures circles and then work together to use context clues to determine meaning. At another time, students may write and present a self-composed writing to the class. I believe in constructing the curriculum around the needs of the students, therefore while the concepts remain the same from year to year, the actual assignments and projects may not.
